Let them eat...macaron!

Paris has come to The Candy Store! Anyone who saw us on A-Channel this past Tuesday and ourFacebook Fansknow what we’re talking about already: macarons! Kevin Mathieson of Art-Is-In Bakery, who spent some time working for Laduree in Paris, has started bringing his heavenly treats to us and we couldn’t be happier!

Macarons were invented in the 18th century in France and were served, most notably at Versailles, but you don’t have to be an aristocrat to appreciate the incredible flavours of these meringue sandwich-like pastries. The macarons we know today were perfected by the Parisian institutuion Laduree who, under the watchful eye of Pierre Desfontaines, took them from single dome-like cookie to otherworldly perfection with the addition of jams, liquors and ganaches.

The macarons available at The Candy Store follow the Laduree tradition (without all the line ups – just ask Katie! She waded through a line easily 80 people long on the Champs Elysee to get her fill of Laduree macarons last month!). On offer at the moment is pistachio, raspberry, chocolate and lemon-coconut – alone or in combination, these pastel luxuries are as impressive as they are divine.
Those with a keen eye will recognize the macarons from Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antionette. Laduree’s macarons are not only sold at Versailles, but also appear in the movie at various points. So dust off your powdered wig and come see for yourself – close your eyes and let us take you to Paris!

Ain’t She Sweet

We’re sure it will come as no surprise that all of us wonderful women at The Candy Store have a pretty decadent sweet tooth. People are always asking us if we ever tire of sweets (answer: not at all – there’s always something different to try when a favourite isn’t hitting the spot). And then there are the skeptics who give us a look and question whether we even eat these fantastic treats (answer: YES! Trust us, these figures aren’t from lack of trying! We’re always munching away – anyone who has come in to find us with a malt ball in our mouth can attest to that!).

This weekend, however, we may finally meet our match: Catherine Burke of Village Buns will be joining us on Saturday for an in-store tasting of her deliciously decadent cinnamon buns.

Catherine is just as sweet as the buns she makes and we're so happy to be able to share her treats with Westboro. In fact, we're not the only ones excited about this - check out this write-up in the Ottawa Citizen and then try them for yourself!

As if all of this sweetness wasn't enough, we've got more sugary good news: The Cupcake Lounge is offering their special Holiday Flavours boxes for pick up at The Candy Store on December 24th!
